Nectarine in a pot?

melle_sacto(Z9/Sunset 14 CA)July 30, 2012

My grandma gave me a seedling tree several years ago. This year it had a few fruits, and they seem like tasty nectarines. I don't actually know what kind of tree it is, it grew from the seedlings off a hybrid plum/nectarine she was growing, and it does not seem to have too much trouble with leaf curl - it looks and tastes very much like a white, freestone nectarine though.

I have it in what I think is about a 15 gallon pot, and it's about 3 feet tall. I pinched it back about two years ago, so it's quite bushy, probably 3 1/2 feet wide.

I would like to move it into a larger pot so we can take the tree with us if we move in the next 5 - 10 years. Not only are the fruits good, I feel sentimental about the fact that grandma gave me the seedling.

What would be a good size pot, and is there anything special I need to do with the tree to keep it healthy in a pot?

Thanks :-)

Melanie

Just use the largest container you think you can practically use. Something like a half whiskey barrel size would be great if you think you can move it.

The most important thing with pot culture of any plant is proper fertilization, because the frequent watering leaches nutrients from the soil very rapidly.

For long time container growing, the growing mix should be your first consideration, after container size. Please look at the recommendations found in the container growing forum. Al

Thanks guys! I did not realize there was a container growing forum...I will search over there for information on the best growing mix. I hadn't considered fertilizing the tree, either. I'll look for a larger pot, taking into account moving the tree. I appreciate your help :-)
