Call of the army worms

canadianplantJuly 19, 2012

THis season has been weird. The long and the short of it, is that a mild past few years have givin rise to a large caterpillar population.

That being said, we havnt had an army worm infestation for a good 10 years (thank god). A few people I know said they seen some this year, which may mean that there will be an explosion of them next year.

I have a very young yard, with lots of new shrubs and trees. Im worried of course, because ive seen them strip a 60 foot ash tree bare in days.

Does anyone know the cycle of these guys in canada? What is the best way to protect things like rhododendron or bamboo, which you cant wrap mesh/tinfoil around the trunks as easy?
