chicken manure and orchards/gardens

chickenheartedJuly 1, 2012

We have a large garden/orchard about i/3 to 1/2 acre, fully fenced and 17 hens. over the winter months I would like to free range the 17 in this area. We have an insulated garden tractor for protection from cold and critters. My husband feels that this will be too much green manure for the area. What do you think?

Are you gonna move it around? If the manure is spread out it shouldn't be a problem with corn/onions and other high N crops. Some like to till it in. Otherwise if manure is in pile or accumulated you might want to make some tea out of it. The key is dilution with water. A little can go a long way. I get 1/2 of a 5 gallon bucket of fresh Ch.manure and put it in a 50 gal drumful of water overnight, Kelp, some mollasses, then apply liberally to area.
Good luck
