The budding season

ltiltonJuly 27, 2013

I'm planning some topworking projects pretty soon, as it's almost August. In my practice, I'm finding that the bark of the T-cut tends to tear sometimes at the bottom.

Is there any good reason not to make an H-cut, with a second horizontal cut below the vertical? It's a lot easier to open up the bark that way.

I haven't down one yet...everything is so slow/late this year...that my scion wood is still to thin (a lot of it)... I'll probably do a little when it warms back up..

I always chip bud... just match the chip with the bud you remove... green to green...wrap it tight/rubber band it...

I'll do it in a week or two, I think. Waiting to get the fruit off the one I'm budding onto. Right now I'm just practicing.

My success chip budding is 1/24. I prefer not getting into the wood and rather slip the bud in t-bud style

Maybe I'll try some with a T and some with an H and see if there's a disadvantage.
