Planting raspberries in fall zone 5

myk1(5 IL)July 9, 2012

It's pretty hit and miss on whether the ground is frozen solid for November shipping and with voles being able to girdle a small tree in a few bites I've always got trees for spring planting.

But my new raspberry bed is already tilled.

Is there any reason not to fall plant raspberries?

I would do it...Just wait until it turns wet...if that should ever occur again! The ground here is rock hard.

If you can get the plants, I don't see why not. If it would be practical, you might want to consider throwing a straw or oak leaf mulch over the bed after planting just to delay the freezing of the soil to give the new roots additional time to grow and establish.

I had hoped there would be some rain so I'd be able to sprout and kill weed seeds over the summer. I may have to water to do it instead. I'm in the severe drought area.

Heavy oak leaf mulch is in the plans. If it's a normal year I'd figure about 4 weeks even with mulch. Where I'd really gain the time establishing is in the spring. I imagine raspberries are waking up in February here even in a bad year.
When I planted them in the spring they took forever to wake up and they don't ship to me until April.

I'll make the order. Thanks.
