Newbie at gardening

Shaunna53July 25, 2012

I have lived most of my life in a condo in Hawaii and am now living in a house where I can have a garden. I just bought three strawberry plants and I keep coming up with info about runners. Can someone explain what are runners and what is the best way to handle them? Why do some grow them in hanging baskets instead of the ground?

Runners are offsets attached to the main plants by long stems. The new plants will root where they touch. Some varieties produce fruit on the runners & others wait until the following year.

Just lift them so they're touching the soil in the basket. Use a hair pin or a piece of wire bent into an upside down U shape from a coat hanger to hold the runner in place until rooted.

I've seen tristar and seascape varieties in baskets because they fruit on new runners. Less pests above ground in baskets. You'll need to water & provide nutrients more frequently.
