First time Growing Watermelons. Question

pjalst(Z5 Albany NY)July 16, 2012

I planted a few Sugar Baby watermelon plants in my yard. This is my first time trying to grow melons. So far so good. The plants(4) are about 6 inches tall and starting to spread since I replanted then from their starter pot last week. I've noticed one bud so far so I guess that means I'm doing something right. I am concerned about the wildlife that I have passing through my yard and want to know if they will eat the melons once they start to mature. In my yard I have seen chipmunks, squirrels, deer, birds, skunks, opossum, raccoon and an occasional fox. Will any of these try to eat the melons?

I've never lost a melon to any animal, but I think you've waited too late to plant. I doubt, if you'll get any meaningful fruit.
