My Elberta Peach tree

mrsg47(7)July 7, 2013

My 'Elberta' took a vacation this season and only produced one peach. Last year it had a large crop for its second year. That is not the problem. The problem is it is getting leggy or at least looks that way. Due to too much rain this spring and early summer, it lost many of its leaves, but new ones have replaced those. My question is, if peaches grow on one year old wood, and the new growth is very thin, how will it hold the peaches for next year? One branch is really druping down and if it had fruit on it next year could snap. I still have to wait until Feb. to prune, yes? Mrs. G

I'd be shortening those branches right now. Cut them back to side branches pointing in the best direction. I do this all summer long as needed on all my stone fruit..
