How long will apples continue to grow in size?

gardenmom(z4 WA)July 31, 2014

Last year, my apples were on the small side - maybe 2 1/2 - 3" across. It's a tree I planted in 1986. Can't remember the variety, but I think it's a Rome. I thinned heavily this year, at least I think I was heavy handed in the pruning. Fruits are currently 2" across.

With our unusually warm and very arid summer, I'm not sure how long the well will hold out. I'm trying to water the fruit trees twice a week. Will the fruit still get bigger? How late into the year must I continue watering?

gardenmom:

Yes the apples will get bigger and you do need to continue watering for probably another 6 wks. You can reduce frequency of watering once it starts to cool down.

Did you thin the apples last year?
If not, that could be why they were small.
