Sugar Baby Watermelon question

springtogarden(6)August 12, 2013

I was just curious, once you have a watermelon that was successfully pollinated, how fast does it grow into a full grown watermelon? I know this may vary. Just wanted to see what people's experiences have been. I am excited I finally have a watermelon on the vine :). First time growing watermelons. My first pumpkin is almost done growing at 2 1/2 weeks and is a sugar pie variety. Hoping the watermelon well be that fast.

Mine, Star Brite ~25 lbs, take 6-7 weeks from pollination. Pick the fruit when the tendril by stem turns brown.

I've got 1 Sugar baby on the vine. It will reach full size but won't be ready to pick until ripe, which time varies quite a bit for different varieties. Sugar baby is one of the quickest to ripen. I believe the DTM is 75 days. The 75 days almost works for me because they mature faster in containers. If I was growing in the ground would add 10 days to 2 weeks. With only one melon it's a bit of a crap shoot when to pick.

We had a really late start to summer so things are just picking up. The little bump grows a lot every day. So cool to watch. Oh boy, I hope I pick right. I am curious to see how it goes. Thanks for the info!
