What a volunteer

rayrose(8)August 14, 2014

This is a single watermelon plant that somehow grew up through a crack in my concrete driveway. I decided to leave it alone and this is what happened. Its taken over half of my driveway and most of 1/3 of my blueberry
hoop house.

You must have fertile soil and good rain. Mine get that big but need a half dozen doses of nitrogen and a dozen waterings.

Nice crop of melons for a volunteer!!

Actually we've had a drought all summer long, which is even more amazing.

If it came up in a crack, it's roots are down in damp soil probably with the "mulch" of the driveway helping out. I really wanted to plant watermelons this year, but time went by and I never did it. Enjoy your melons!
