Is there any such thing as a ph tester without having to get soil test. One you can believe in????

Yes, there are several good pen type testers. Forget about those cheap probe type.

To test pH, use distilled water in a jar (rain water is almost as good, but never tap water), then put a fair amount of soil in, shake and let rest for a period of time. Then test the pH of the water. This will be accurate enough for most purposes. Make sure your pH meter is calibrated, and you clean the probe after a soil test as it tends to dirty the probe. Best to test several samples in the area, or mix several samples together to make sure you aren't testing a "hot spot" that doesn't represent your soil overall.
