Topping pears to limit height

Noogy(6 sw mi)August 25, 2012

I've come to the point where I have a Bartlett on seedling rootstock that's 11' in height. I've read, but never performed the pruning of the main leader, in order to limit height without promoting new growth. I want to keep it at 10".

Has the time come?

Thanks.

The sooner you do it the smaller the wound, although such a wound shouldn't pose much of a problem for a healthy tree. Prune down to a decent sized branch if you can.

Hman,
The diameter is at 1/2 inch. And I loose about 18". I'm thinking about holding off to get one more set up there.
Thanks.
