keiffer pear - reposting question need help

mes111(5b -Purling NY & 7b -Nassau County NY)August 21, 2013

I had posted before but no one knew so maybe some new eyes can tell.

This pear was in a footie.

Can anyone even guess at what happened here?

I could not find anything via internet search.

Thanx, Mike

It just appears to have dehydrated from the sap supply having been cut off, such as when insects eat a portion of the stem, etc.

I occasionally see fruit from our Keiffer pear trees that are are on the ground in that condition... The suggestion that they are dehydrated makes sense to me. Did this happen to many of your fruit?

This tree is only second year in the ground and is being trained as espalier so I thinned all but 2 fruits. The other is still in the footie and growing.

This tree grew very vigorously and had to do some severe late summer pruning of all the vertical shoots that were growing out of the top horizontal branch. That is when I noticed this "prune" of a pear.
