Conserning my pawpaw trees

pezzuti9(z5 PA)August 30, 2012

I just finished cleaning up around my three paw paw trees.

The Mango and the Ruby Keenar are going into their fourth year. The Sunflower I just planted this spring.

My questions are now that I cleaned out the weeds and old mulch away from each tree should I apply and sort of compost or manure then mulch on top of that or would I be better off waiting until next spring to apply the compost or manure and just add a thick layer of some sort of mulch

to get them through the winter.

Both the Mango and the Ruby Keener flowered again this season but not at the same time (think this may be a problem) down the road. One other item the Mango has far outgrown the Ruby Keenar. Gave the both a good dose of fertilizer after they dropped their flowers also some Epson salts.

Today I used my PH meter and it read low 7 on the scale so I have just added in some pelletitized sulfur. I know the meter works okay because I tested my blueberry bed and it read in the PH 5 range.

The sunflower is too young to flower.

Thanks for your input

I don't fertilize mine. I would add mulch or compost now, because they typically live in rich forested soil.
