feeding blueberry bushes

CarternKYAugust 3, 2012

I have about 11 blueberry bushes that I need to mulch. I would like to do it this month but want to add an inch of compost around each plant first. I know that with fertilizers there are certain times you should and should not side dress. Does it matter when I sidedress with compost? Is it going to cause extra growth at a weird time or anything?

I wouldn't think adding compost at any time would be bad. I would add more than a couple inches tho........I put about 4-6 around mine this spring. I used a combination of pine needles and peat moss. If you have pine bark that would be even better. I have noticed that it's really helped keep the soil around the plants cooler this summer......under the compost it's always nice and cool.

Agree, as long as the compost is acidic. Sounds like you are talking more about mulch than compost.
