Identifying Berry Bearing Bush

ramrevheadAugust 27, 2007

Hello all! I joined several years ago and I cant recall if I ever posted or not. ANyway, I am from upstate NY. Real upstate... like in the Adirondacks near Lake Champlain about an hour from Montreal, PQ.

I have a nice 5 acre lot with lots of fruit trees that we built our house on about 3 years ago. We have two types of apple trees, Macs and Im not sure of the other hybrid, cherry trees, wild grapes, raspberries, black raspberries, blackberries. We also have quite a few wild ash and one oak. Then we have two bushes within about 15' of eachother that I cannot identify. They seem identical except one is bearing fruit and the other is not.

I have clay soil but I also have drainage tile. They grew wild in an overgrown field/x apple orchard that I cleared. Their bark is not unlike a cherry in look but like a yellow birch also. Im linking some pictures.

thanks for your help!

Without looking at the pictures (having a problem with figuring out the link). I would guess buckthorn. The wild (i.e. it popped up in a fence row) friut-bearing tree with cherry like bark almost always is buckthorn.

I think you nailed it ginkgonut. I've never seen a buckthorn but the pictures at Purdue look identical to ramrevhead's pics.

Here is a link that might be useful:

yes, thanks peeps! That's it! They are not unattractive to me and with a manicured dense lawn all around they dont seem to be invasive. I have a male and a female.

I did have a nightshade appear out of no where in my flower island this summer though! It is very colorful but very poisonous... should I get rid of it before it spreads?
