Chip bud advice needed

hannah9880(5b)September 3, 2013

I've read a lot on the threads, but I'm not sure if the protruding bud itself should be covered. I've done three chip buds already (I think it's too late here in MI for T-buds) and did not cover next year's bud. What would be good to use to protect it during our long winter?

I use parafilm. Swelling buds easily push through 1 or 2 layers.

No need to worry about protecting the grafts through the winter. Wrapping it well for the first two weeks to keep it from drying out while it is taking is all that is necessary or even possible.

Also as stated parafilm is great for grafting as it gives a good seal and does not need to be removed by you as the plant can easily overcome it plus it breaks down due to sunlight. When I was T-budding in 100 degree wx the parpafilm that was in direct sun was falling apart in one week. But it was enough, all the graft pieces were green and seem to have taken. So now just making sure the neighbor kids keep their basket ball on their side of the fence
