Fuzzy Kiwi Vines

charlieboringSeptember 12, 2013

I have one female fuzzy kiwi vine that failed to grow a "trunk" in its first year. How do I induce it to grow a trunk in the second year?

In a few years it will be growing more trunks than you ever wanted. It can take them a few years to get established but watch out after that.

You can cut it back to three or four buds and start again in the Spring.

So if I cut it back to three or four buds and start again in the Spring the effect will be about a years development delay?

Just leave it be and it will pick up where it left off next year. For grapes they say cut it back so you get a continuous trunk, but the kiwi will look like a continuous trunk in a few years anyway. Grapes are more likely to branch from that spot. Kiwis will put out shoots from everywhere in future years, in particular from the ground.
