Help with Pruning this Apple Tree

onthebrinck(6 Central New Jersey)September 26, 2012

This apple tree was planted this year, and the nursery had done a good job pruning it. However, there seems to be competition for the 'leader'ship. Should I remove the shorter leader or bend it. How does the tree look otherwise? Thanks

PS: I should wait until late Winter, right?

Just tie down or weigh down the smaller competing leaders to turn them into more horizontal scaffolds. If the branches seem to be crowding each other, then you can think about pruning some of the extra branches off, a.k.a. thinning. This is best done in March timeframe.
