Animal in the orchard...

fireduck(10a)September 7, 2013

Next to my orchard I have a section of lawn. This morning I noticed 7 or 8 little holes (2 inch squares) in the lawn where the grass was scratched out. There was no tunnel or the like. I know it was not a gopher or mole. What does this???

Where do you live Fire? If you are in the south I would say armadillos. Cranes can also make the holes you describe.

squirrels make such holes if they think someone else has buried an acorn there. Do you have squirrels in Zone 10?

Went out with the flashlight last nite and discovered the skunk digging in the garden.

My guess is the skunks. Look for their tracks in the dirt. They also dig in fresh composted garden plots. It's best to fence them out. A fence of 6 inches works fine.

The skunks leave smaller V shaped holes where they are hunting up grubs.

(If you are or there are gentlemen in the household-male urine works pretty good to keep the skunks from digging in lawns)
