pepper spray ok on strawberries with ants?

Ants are eating my strawberries before I get to! I'm hesitant about pepper spray for fear it won't wash off. Does anyone know if that's so? Any other approaches?

pick the berries anyway, place them in a bowl of cold water. The ants will drown, rinse berries.
