Golden Russet & Fireblight

megamav(5a - NY)September 3, 2013

I've mentioned a few times on here that the Golden Russet trees I see have severe cases of fireblight, maybe someone has seen worse, but its like this every year for GR.

This is from an orchard in Columbia County, New York.
I would consider this to be severe.

Fruit looks great though. 6 weeks to go!

At least the apples look good...... This is what agro ontario said:

" Fire blight has become a serious problem in high density apple plantings that contain new susceptible varieties and dwarfing rootstocks (Figure 4-153).
"

Stay away from new varieties and probably dwarfing rootstocks it seems.....

I understand why orchards plant at high density, but the disease and pest management seems to be a huge problem for certain varieties.

Less light for a majority of the tree, and less air movement with high density plantings.

My plantings in my yard average about 12-14 feet apart for half standard.

Rhode Island Greening usually is another heavy hitter with FB, but this year, seems like its OK at one orchard that usually has a problem.

Im not sure if this orchard is as diligent with remediating the fireblight problem, its possible this issue has been allowed to linger on the GR year after year.
