Fruit that Squirrels Love...

lopearedgalootSeptember 25, 2010

Hello,

Got a fruit here I've never seen.

Looks like a miniature potato. Has thorns on the outside. About the the size of your thumb in length and with a really dark cored seed almost as big as the fruit itself. White meat. Tree is about fifteen feet tall. Light tan bark. Triangular leaves like a cottonwood tree.

Can someone please help identify this item? I've never seen it's like here in Colorado before but my friend says that they did a lot of experimental work back in the 70s or 80s brought in to see if they would grow and produce fruit here. I'm wondering if it might be a langsat although it doesn't look like online photos of them.

Thank You, have a good weekend! LEG

You may be talking about a jujube. I found one here in Denver last summer. Boy do the squirrels love it! It tastes a bit like a dry apple, but the pit can be easily chewed.

The leaves you describe don't sound like jujube leaves, but most jujube do have some thorns. I bought one this spring from Roger Meyer.

This is the one I found last fall.

Do a search for Jujube and see if that's what you have.

Roger's website is still not finished, but you could get the contact information from here:
