seller of kiwi "jenny" in the USA?

tab126October 7, 2012

I'm curious about planting some kiwi vines. After looking around a bit, I think I settled on the "jenny" variety, but every search I do ends up at a British nursery. Most American sellers are pushing the "issai" variety.

Is there just a different description for the US market? Will a "Jenny" vine just not do well here?

Unless I am mistaken, "Jenny" is an A. deliciosa cultivar that happens to be self-fertile (i.e., it's a "fuzzy" kiwi). "Issai" is an A. arguta ("Hardy" kiwi) hybrid of some sort that happens to bear parthenocarpically but can also benefit from pollen of an A. arguta male. So they are not at all the same.

I've come across "Jenny" in my browsing and also wondered why it doesn't seem to be available in the U.S. Seems like a good deal, although there's no telling what the chill requirement is (probably not low).
