I planted a dwarf candy crisps apple tree yesterday. Will it begin to produce fruit buds next year?

Probably not, especially if the tree was headed back, or the roots were trimming. I'd say slim chance, additionally, I wouldnt let it fruit, I'd let it get adjusted to the new planting situation, and wait a year.
