An orchid I recently added to my collection.
Sorry but its dyed,it will go back to being white next bloom season.pretty though.
And so far no true blue orchid of any kind....
Well rats. How do they dye them?
The roots are injected with blue dye at a certain time before the flowers open.
For the ones I've seen, they inject the dye right into the flower stalk, 3"-4" above where it comes of of plant.
Also, aren't there Aussie thunias that are true blue?
If the producers can get the rest of the flower the same dark hue as the lip, that may be attractive. Not digging that cotton candy gradient color.
Here is an almost blue orchid, maybe just a hint of mauve.
Difficult to grow and its common name is sun orchid.
Common in bushland around Sydney, Australia.
I can see the true blue is so beautiful but the dye ones look artificial. I think I got a blue dendro last October. If I remembered it correctly. It's bluish, purplish from the outside but white in the middle. I didn't have a chance to take picture before I gave it to a friend as a gift.
Watched with interest a marketing ploy at a local HD.
they had them inside near the registers instead of the garden section They had Phals in deep blue bright orange a nd hot pink many had glitter glued to the petals. They had a complete sellout!! Guess will be seeing a lot more of them?? lol gary
