Zero cost, organic container mix evaluations

emgardenerSeptember 4, 2012

Just looked at the roots of 6 vegetable containers that I used different organic soil mixes in.

It's quite interesting, I've been using branches, stumps, leaves and compost in different arrangements to see

what grows best.

Here is a link that might be useful: Organic vegetable containers

Interesting. I have a voluptuous pot of 4-5 ft. tall Coleus, Perilla, and Persian shield in a big washtub of nothing but last fall's shredded grass and leaves from the mower bag.

Very nice!

Tell me more about what you used. Is the leaves and grass composted? Nice plants!

Thanks but all of the credit goes to mother nature and the inherent beauty of the plants.

Sometime in December when we mowed the last time, we just dumped the mower bag into the (empty before that) washtub, about half grass, half shredded leaves. I put the cuttings in the tub in March. It really was that easy, much easier than carrying it all to compost pile, then back where I wanted to use it. In z5 you probably mow last in Oct and plant in April, which would offset the colder temps by sitting longer.
