Growing Cymbidiums

allymarie(zone 10, So. Fl.)December 27, 2013

I would like to know if I can grow cymbidiums in zone 10, South Florida? They are big beautiful orchids but I don't know much about them.I read they grow in the cooler climates. Are there some warm growing cymbidiums that will do well in my area? Any info will be appreciated, thanks.

The problem is the need for average summer night temperatures below about 20C for some....and then a slight cool down through autumn to winter.
BUT, there are Hybrid Cymbidiums bred for warmer climates such as Cymbidium Golden Elf. So it is a matter of finding a reliable Cymbidium source to tell you which cymbidiums are likely to flower in South Florida.

To sum, the answer is yes. If you contact me directly I can point you to a noted authority on these particular orchids.

Check out Carter and Holmes Orchids in South Carolina - they do quite a bit of cymbidiums.
