Ulrich Brunner Fils--espalier / on trellis?

kristimamaMarch 19, 2012

Hi everyone,

The only time I've seen UBF in person is at Russian River Rose Co, and they grow it as 4-5' tall round, mounded shrubs to maximize easy cultivating for rose oils.

But I've seen it mentioned here on GW and other sites that you can treat UBF as a climber, and put it on a trellis or espaliered.

I can already see that the plant I have is shooting out long lax canes in the 3 gallon pot it's in, so I am guessing it'll work.

Has anyone tried this? Do you have pics?

Some info. about Ulrich Brunner Fils from 2011 edition of "Encyclopedia of Roses": Parentage: Paul Neyron x unknown. Height/spread: 5.7 ft x 4.1 ft Zone 5
The plant has long, slender, upright habit and few thorns. If its long shoots are pegged down, they will break into flower all along their length.

I hope the above helps. The book doesn't have a picture of the entire bush, only the flower.
