How to get rid of garden and plant grass;problem with tree roots

HeatherRDMay 29, 2011

Hi everyone,

I would really appreciate some advice. We have a front yard garden that was here when we moved in, and quite frankly, I'm just not the gardening type. I'd like to get rid of the garden and plant grass. However, when we tried to use a rototiller to get rid of the bush and plant roots, we ran into much bigger roots from the maple tree in our front yard. So we weren't able to rototill the garden because of these large tree roots. Is there something else we can do to get rid of the garden plants' roots? Our neighbor suggested using a weedkiller (I forget which one), but we'd like to do something less toxic, if possible...

Thank you very much for your help! :-)

How big is the garden? How many plants? Can you just dig them up one at a time? If you are dealing with maple roots, that may be what you have to do.
