Is a water meter more beneficial than not?

snarkinJuly 27, 2014

My dad's an avid gardener and he just sent me a water meter as a gift. I've never been 100% on knowing when my soil needs to be watered I know you're supposed to stick your finger in to the second knuckle and see how it feels, but I can never really tell if it's wet or moist or moist-ish... maybe since it's potted soil or maybe because I'm a newbie.

Anyway, I'm a bit hesitant about the meter. It sounds like a dream in theory, but everywhere you poke it is a different reading and I feel like i'm injuring the roots in my potted plants! That CANNOT be good, right? Also, the reading varies by the hour.

Anyone have thoughts? Or maybe reccos if this is really the way to go?

Thanks!

No, water meters are bad. When the meter registers water use, the city or water district sends you a bill. Better to not have a water meter, if you can.

Are you wiping the tip of the moisture meter between readings? You need to.

Don't think you need to take a moisture reading often.
Relax, enjoy, keep reading. All of us were newbies once.
