Does it work? I found a blog that seems to think it works great on houseplants.

Yes, it works. I have used it for houseplants for a few years now. Same method as the link you provided.

I consider it important to overflow/flush each container every few-several months to avoid salt build up since the method doesn't have any drainage water, but other than that it has worked as advertised.
