west pennsylvania...new greenhouse

marullo1947March 10, 2010

Having just retired I am about to build a small hobby greenhouse. I plan to insulate and keep it above freeze level during winter. What can I reasonably expect to grow from Oct- Feb. in this area? Lettuce, herbs...or something more rewarding? any input appreciated.

I'd think you could grow,

Poc Choi
Mizuna- mustard
Mache - corn salad
Tatsoi- mustard
Pea shoots- tops

Swiss chard.

Any of the cool season crops.

Hi Marullo, and congratulations on your retirement and new greenhouse! I don't have a greenhouse (envious), but I think if you try Penn State - online -or your county extension office, they might be a big help. At least you'd be with like minds. Try the link below.

Marullo, Get Eliot Coleman's "Four Season Harvest."
He will show you how to get "organic vegetables from
your home garden all year long." Fabulous book, it's
given me the courage to grow on the backside of the
calendar, as Eliot says. Congrats on that retirement
and greenhouse. I'm still dreaming of a greenhouse, but
have used small hoop houses over my raised beds and it's
March and I have beets and carrots about an inch tall.
(They were planted in February.) I live in northern
calif. where we get about 6 inches of snow a winter, not much rain, but LOTS of wind. (upslope and downslope
winds off of Mt. Shasta) Good luck!
