building a pergola

v1rtu0s1ty(5a)August 27, 2010

Good afternoon folks. I am building a pergola. I would like to reduce expense as much as possible. I was planning to use pressure treated woods that we can buy from Home Depot. However, I just learned today that PTW twist. I also learned that I should buy kiln dried PTW.

My posts will be standing on an 8" diameter concrete.

What should I really buy? I don't want them to twist. Oh, is there a product we can apply to prevent this from happening or slow it down?

If you use cedar you don't have the problem with toxins in your wood. Not sure about twisting of either type of wood.

I was thinking of painting the pressure treated wood with color white. What do you think?

I would use opaque white stain instead of paint, and only have a good drying period.

That is very beautiful! Where can I buy this opaque white? And this opaque white you mentioned, is it really for treating pressure treated woods? What's the exact brand that you used?

Thanks! :)

There are a variety of brands. Any Home Depot or Lowes or good hardware or paint store will have some. I think sometimes they call it fence stain. I have used it on PT wood and on cedar and actually it holds up better for me on the PT wood than on cedar. YMMV

Awesome! I've started digging the dirt today. The dirt is a bit hard to work on since it hasn't rained for almost 2 weeks now. I'm deciding where I should put the pergola footings.
