Propagation by blossom stem

thominindy(6)January 5, 2011

Hello All.

I would like to propogate my only Chimera (Rob's Monkeyshines) from bloom stem. It has several nice bloom stalks, and the blooms are not ready to open yet. My question is should I remove the blooms now and give the stalk time to mature without blooms? Or, does it not matter?

Thank You for your attention.

Thom -

I only was able to do it with the varieties (chimeras or not) that have large bloomstalk leaves - bracts. I think it is an issue of the food source for the new plantlet. The bloomstalks with miniscule bracts just die for me. I am afraid that Monkeyshines would be the case. I will wait until the bud will open - as long as the flower is fresh - the bracts keep growing, when it is spent - the whole bloomstalk dies.

Our own Nancy R. in collaboration with a friend Alana put instructions on Violet Voice. Hopefully it will help.
