Tattoo'd fish!?!

debndal(8a DFW, TX)January 9, 2007

Was in the petstore the other day and saw some things that really made my blood boil. They had Parrot fish tattoo'd with "I (a drawing of a heart) U". And some tinfoil barbs that were tattoo'd with some kind of dots. What in the world do these people think they are doing?? I hope no-one is buying these poor fish. They need not encourage the suppliers.

Has anybody seen the new "genetically altered" glo-fish? They are genetically altered danios and are really pretty under a blacklight...I just don't know about this "genetically altered" concept. Something just doesn't seem right about "manufactured fish".... and they were $9.00 to boot!

At least the glo-fish aren't hurt by the process. The dye injection sounds painful. With so many colorful fish provided by nature these oddities are shameful. Not buying them is the best way to stop it.

James, I was tempted to get a couple of the glofish. True, their process wasn't cruel. I guess it will take time to get used to genetically altering animals. What's next? Dogs, cats? Anyway, I also wonder if they would look as pretty without being under a blacklight. I didn't want to spend $9 on a fish that would look washed out in my aquarium. I'll wait and see if I hear any comments from folks that have gotten some.

I don't think the tattooed fish are selling all that well. I was out visiting a wholesaler I used to work for and saw them, I asked the owner if piercings were next? I think They are too expensive, and will hopefully stay that way until they decide its not worth the trouble. The number 1 imported fish from the far east is the Dyed white black tetra or mixed fruit tetra, I was told by one trans shipper that they import more of them each week than anything else. The stupid dyed Jelly Bean Cichlids also sell well, too well in my opinion, #1 its a deformed hybrid, and #2 the color fades. THe Glowfish did fascinate me, I had some, and if you use the "gro lux" plant bulbs they do show the color better. They're dyeing the danios now too, they've been doing Botias, and catfish too.

celaeno - Thanks for that link. I had no idea the list of dyed fish was so long. I had only noticed in the past the Parrot fish and glass fish and the tetras. This is an awful practice - there are certainly enough colorful fish that this shouldn't occur. Not that I agree with genetically altering any living creature, I would much rather see that than dying and tatooing.

I purchased my Yellow ParrotFish almost 7 years ago, prior to knowing about dyed fish. I have to say she has grown beautifully. Her color has not faded, she eats just fine, even though her mouth doesn't close, and she is just my absolute favorite fish ever. She has no imperfections at all. I look at it this way, there isn't enough boycotting in the world to stop it from happening. So I would rather buy these fish and know that the least I can give them is a great home and awesome food!

I would never get a fish with a tattoo. Just seems cruel.

Now glowfish I like. I don't have any (I have PLENTY of fish already) but I would consider some for a new small tank. The genes were spliced in years back on the eggs of the first glowfish. The ones you see have been bread (sp?) "in the usual manor." You could breed your own glowfish if you wished.

They are much cheaper at our stores, check Petsmart for one.
