Little black flies or knats

ZuzuILOctober 17, 2005

There are little black flies flying around my african

violets and they seem to be increasing in number.

Is there any way to safely get rid of them without using

harsh chemical?

Thanks for any advice.

Zuzu, they're fungus gnats and the best way to get rid of them is to repot your plant with new soil. You may have been keeping your soil too moist, so keep an eye on that too.

Good luck.

They are most likely Fungus Gnats.
They are annoying but not bad for the plant
They live on rotting organic matter (in your soil)
A light coating of sand might help to keep them out of the soil
Try letting your plants dry out more.
If it still bothers you... the treatment is called Gnatrol.
It is not a harsh chemical and is sort of organic.
