funky leaf growth

luvioletsOctober 10, 2007

I have a semi-mini Lil' Rich Girl on which I have discovered what I think are small leaves growing on the edge of several leaves growing from the crown. At first they looked like little green bumps along the leaves and stems. But when taking a closer look, a few are big enough to make out pairs of leaves. I have never seen this type of growth before and wondered if anyone else has.

A couple of close-up pics to show what I'm talking about.

A baby plant!

What do you think?

Yes, I've seen this happen with a very curly leaf that was rooting. Baby leaves just appeared on top of the leaf while the leaf was rooting.

Yeppers, that happened once to a micromini girl leaf I was rooting; it was freaky then, and it's freaky now. Enjoy!

Well then I'm just going to watch them and see if any grow big enough to pluck off and stick 'em in a pot. Thanks for the responses.

That's so very cool! Would you please post some more pictures as they get bigger?

Sure I'll post more pics as things progress. At first I thought it was algae or mold, then I thought it might have been a bug but now that I know it's not some weird disease, I'll stop scraping them off! I'm curious to see if they develop into anything substantial or if they'll just grow to a certain size then die off. I discovered this when I was repotting it so the plant is still in shock from that.

I have not been able to find a name for this type of leaf growth but have an email in to the hybridizer at Lyndon Lyons to see if it's a know trait to this variety or an anomaly.

I'll keep you posted.
