follow up to AV broken off at the neck

fortyseven_gwOctober 22, 2013

Well, Irina, Perle_de_Or & Others,
You have answered my question
It seems that if
the neck is left alone and bagged with the soil
slightly moist, keeping it out of direct sun,
the stump might produce plantlets. Not sure if the
remaining neck should be scraped or not.

FP is not a trailer; it is a large standard.

I think it would be great to know the lineage of our hybrids today but I also think it would be about as complicated as doing one's family tree. There are so many hybrids and I don't think that in the frenzy of producing new ones, few people, if any, kept records. Although, looking back, it would have been a good idea.

I didn't scrape my necks. They actually started growing on their own by the time I de-crowned them and then went back to them a few days later. I am in the process of re-potting everything and had no intention of trying to grow them until I saw them sprouting on their own.

I also grow Fisherman's Paradise - and I wouldn't say it suckers more than usual. The leaf you didn't break - is not the usual cause of suckering, Stress is. If you for example missed the watering and let it dry bad - the plant goes into survival mode - and starts making babies just in case.

I scrape the neck if it is real brown when I pot it deeper. And if I let the neck grow too long- I reroot the crown. The success of this procedure is 95%.

The registered AVs have the parentage filled in the registration form - but it is not accessible to the public. If you really interested - you can sometimes track the hybridizer and ask him or her this question.

Thanks, Linda and Irina, for all this good info.

I hesitate to ask where you got FP, because four or
five years ago, I was sure I had to have it and searched
everywhere. I could not find it. But now I think it best
to not get tempted. That's good to know about what causes
suckers. I did not think I was stressing the plant.
It just seems to grow like a weed. By now, it must
have produced 40 babies over the years. Most of
which I was able to give away. Once I divide the
double crowns, there will be more to go to new
homes as already good-size plants. The blooms
at first were lovely doubles, now they are not
as fluffy or as varied in hues. Still pretty, though, just
not "spectacular." I know
you said the blooms get tired on an older
plant. I usually don't keep the babies long enough
to bloom, so I don't know if the babies
ever bloomed like Mama did at first.

My FP came from Harmony Greenhouse in FL. They are not selling to the public, only to commercials.

Try to contact ebay sellers from FL - jacksviolets - and sallysgarden. They probably either have it or can get it.
