Transplanting Rhodi in early bloom??

annzgwMarch 29, 2007

I have a grouping of 20 Rhododendrons and want to remove 10 of them to the other side of the bed. They're a low, mounding variety and are now about 18" high and about 24" wide.

The buds are just starting to open and I want to confirm that it's ok to go ahead and move them now or else I'll have to wait until the new leaf growth has matured.

I didn't see this specific question in the search I apoligize if it has been covered before.

Annz, moving them in bloom is fine. Transplanting during a period of active growth should be avoided - that's the time immediately following bloom when the leaf buds are opening. Observe the usual cautions to mulch the root zone and keep watered until they've settled in again.
