First azalea seedling bloom ever for me.

jon_z6bApril 22, 2011

My first bloom- ever, from my hybridization attempts of azalea. I'm really happy with it.

Probably Gibralter x Admiral Semmes

(What I think is) Gibralter is the more orange flower. I think the flowers on my seedling are larger than those on Gibralter!

Very Nice! Here is a photo of admiral semmes:

Your seedling looks a little like the Western species Occidentale which doesn't survive on the East Coast.

From seed to bloom in just over two years- so it's doing pretty good.

This was the foliage from the beginning of last year- it has a definite Gibralter character.

With the first batch of seedlings I selected against a spot disease that is prevalent in my yard. So the seedlings I kept showed some resistance to this but then last year by the end of the summer 90% of those developed rust (but not all!). I think the reason I never noticed rust before is normally the azaleas would have already been defoliated from the spot disease before the rust could show. If I have enough time to work at it, I will continue to breed and select for disease resistance. I have another fresh batch of seedlings again this year. I would also like to get a blotch or spots in there!

the short neck came from Gibralter but the long stigma and pistols came from elsewhere...
