Anyone know anything about this one? I see it listed on a commercial supplier but cannot find any info on the web. Just curious.
I know.....there's really no info about it. I'm going to try and make it to the IAS show and sale in September. Hoping to find it there. I need it for the collection :)
I'd suspect it might just be a marketing ploy. It's good to be able to offer something which no one else has. The IAS would be a good place to find out. It may only be something like a Thai Giant with a new label, one that has been grown in Malaysia perhaps.
Apparently, it is a selection of A. portei.
Definitely A. portei will look different to a Thai Giant. This is a photo of some I came across in my wanderings a few years ago. It was in New Guinea though, so maybe it could be called "Alocasia New Guinea Monster".
any follow-up on this plant, i cant find any source or info...
Brugmansia-Quebec have some in his Catalogue 2013
Here is a link that might be useful: Brugmansia-Quebec
A few sites have it now. Logee's pic says Courtesy of Malesiana Tropicals (I think). Same photo (or plant) at Agristarts but reversed. Looks nice. If Agristarts has it, it will be everywhere.
I hate buzz names...fads w/e...
on the plus side that excites me, thats a plant i have admired from my computer chair only...and searched quite a bit for...I just cant swallow the cost of buying starts online, or the thought of a resonably common extremly fast growing plant is really going to cost 20+ for a start with 3 tiny leaves...
theres always lots of nice overflow from agristarts tho, once they start carring something its only a matter of time til it floats thru here : D
I know this is an old post, but had to add my 2 cents. I grew several Malaysian Monsters in my garden in Maryland, zone 7a, about 30 miles NW of Washington DC, last summer 2014. My favorite alocasia! I found out it likes open shade very bright light , maybe some direct morning. It didn't burn in more sun, but much smaller. I measured leaves over 3' long. Lots of fish emulsion and fert for me.
