Another Amorphophallus autumn question

woodnative(6)September 29, 2005

I have posted here before with newbie Amorphophallus questions. My two konjacs have died down, and my unknown is currently dying down. The 3rd plant is an A. madagascariensis, which is still as green as can be and just put out a new side shoot. As winter will soon be here in NJ, should I epect this one to begin to die back soon, shall I let a frost kill the top, or will I have to bring it inside when the weather gets too cold.

Also, I know konjacs can be stored bare on a cool shelf. Can the other species be treated the same when dormant, should I pack them in dry peat moss, or is there a better storage method?

Thanks (again).

Personally, I would bring it inside and let it row as long as it wants. I've had maybe 50 of them come up over the last month and they are all under grow lights now. If you want nice tuber growth then keep it growing!!

Do not let the frost whack these plants.....this might cause the tuber to rot from being in cold, wet soil....I would think this is a big mistake. I bring my huge konjacs in the garage in pots (24-30 inch diameter and yes, they weigh a ton) and stop watering them completely and let them go down when they want. When we get a nice day later this fall and they have started to look really bad I dig them out of their pots.

If I have a new species then I always store it in peat or potting mix since I'd rather be safe than sorry :o) Dan
