What is this rhododendron?

rhodyman(SE PA, USDA Z6)June 3, 2006

Roger Pellegrini sent me this photo and asked me to identify his rhododendron. That is not my expertise, so I am posting the photo for Roger.

He is growing this plant in Sparkill, NY, and the older parent plant is 12 foot tall.

Any ideas?

Rhodyman, As soon as I saw your photo, I thought the flowers looked 'Picotee', so I searched for Rhododendron Picotee, and found this:

Hmm, considering that the parent plant is 12' tall, that would probably rule out the plant being a yaku rhodo, right rhodyman? The flowers sure look similar, though. :)

The yellow flare and the tall habit are key characteristics. A larger picotee is Consoline's Windmill.
