Advice on Rhody purchases

hrm8879June 4, 2006

I am very new to rhody/azaleas. I want to put in two rhodies under a very large sumac tree. They would have about 10-12 feet of headroom, and would be in almost completely full shade. The spot were I want to plant them will get only dappled sun about 2.5 to 3 hours a day. Is this an appropriate spot for rhodies? I want a purple and a white, or some combination of those colors. Any recommendations on varieties? Thanks in advance!

No, they need more sun. Rhodies likes some shade, but they need several hours of sun during the mid-summer period to set flower buds. The alternative is to open up the sumac tree so that more sun comes through. Also, rhododendrons and azaleas have shallow roots, so they can't compete with another plant that has shallow roots. I am not sure about your sumac tree; we have wild sumacs (Rhus copallinum 'winged' and Rhus typhina 'staghorn') which both spread with shallow rhizomes and would not be suitable for around rhodies.
