uppotting amorphs for the season?

lomodor(6)October 7, 2013

well most of my amorphs, konjac, paeonifollius, sauromatums, and amorph species are unpotted..
i am amazed at the root growth on the corms..
pics here of some of them..
larger konjac were pushing the bottoms of the pots out..
i also wondered why the potting mix was heaving up over the pots..
im pleased with size of konjac end of this season..
they put on some size.. i still think im not fertilizing
enough.. lol.. i think its the concentration im giving them..
i think im keeping them on a diet.. :) LOL
bunches and bunches of side corms.. i can see ive got
to get more 1gal and 2 gal pots for next yr..

I'm about to join you friend!

I still have a few with leaves up but they are waning fast!

I noticed the soil heaving on my big konjac "pappy" several months ago, I wasn't surprised to find stolons to be at fault...when the soil if the entire pot pushed up from the middle about 2 weeks ago...I was surprised!
It could only be the central corm putting in massive amounts of weight!

I'm rather depressed about the seasons end, more so each year, but I do have excavation to look forward to, it's always a blast having to treasure hunt for escapees!
My collection is still really small, sadly small if you ask me, but i did go on and bite the bullet, and bought a few last year, 2 of them make leaf bulbs, symonianus and yulensis, they went nuts, producing 4 leaves and 3 leaves respectively.
The biggest of the leaves contained 12 leaf bulbils, and with 3 leaves yet to drop, I'll certainly have 20+ of each, not counting what the original bulb did under ground, pretty cool stuff!

excellent grab..for us in where weather gets to cold in
winter..we do get to enjoy unpotting our treasures and
see how we did during the growing season..
i plan to add to my collection..sigh.. luckily i have a huge yard..and full basement..:)
i want to start adding species now.. i feel ok with my
growing of the amorphs i have.. still want to get the other
2 "tropical" amorphs..descus-salvae,and gigas..
but..there are so many species out there..
?? do u store your corms bareroot..or put them in peat
overwinter?? i store mine bareroot.. except some of the
small ones.. i put them in peat..and spray them with water maybe 2 times during the winter..

Yup same storage technique exactly!

Big ones on the shelf, lil ones in bags of peat, I only spritzed em once, I don't think they needed that even...

I tryied uprooting pappy, his roots are still all white and solid so ill give it a few more days and try again!

If you're even interested in a swap let me know, my email is linked!

I don't know what's going on here. We have had such a weird weather summer/fall. Many of mine are just sending up a second leaf and all are in full leaf with no sign of going dormant. There is a full freeze forecast for next week--I guess the car isn't going in the garage anytime soon.....
My current fave--hoping there might be some little ones in there

I think we are wiping a tear right now too tommyr!

We had an all round strange weather year here too, it was the coolest July in 70 years here!
There was also a 10 day stretch of rain with no sun, uv index didnt break 3/16, that's dark!
The colocasia suffered the most, but it couldn't have been good for anything!

I had come to a breaking point of frustration when I tryied to join GW, after the 5th try I gave up and tried this handle, it worked and I went with it...provocative tho, huh?

I just unpotted pappy, I had to stand back and cuss to myself, unbelievable amounts of growth! And pups, omg the pups...

Yea I need some pollen!
I was pretty pleased last winter when Pappy started spiking, it was my first amorph flower!
It was about 3' total height.

I'm just not that into their flowers, the first thing I thought when I saw him was, oh yea, he's gunna be big next year!
Then I thought about the flower!
I hope it doesn't go dormant after blooming this year, I dread that happening!

I stopped counting offsets at 75...
I think I have enough now!

I gotta get some of the other forms of konjac! There's some great ones out there, it just seems like they only become available this time of year, I never have extra money in fall...

bgp..no dont take titanum corms out of potting mix
during dormancy..
they will dry out..and wont make it to new growth..
my titanums arent near dormancy ..yet.. i will back off on
watering..no fertilizing.. and keep temperature same ..
currently 74F..
time to repot titanums is when they come out of dormancy
and begin growth again..either flowering..or vegetative
stage..
?? what size is your titanum???
