over wintering rhododendrons

shelleyh(z5 NY)July 17, 2005

I planted 2 rhododendrons this summer. Prince Derohan and Nova Zembla. Is there anything I should do to protect these shrubs or just let them be. They are next to a 6 foot fence and protected on 2 sides.

I'm not familiar with Prince D, but NZ is a very tough cookie and easily could stand on its own to -10-15F without any help.
The main problem would be not just cold, but rather winter sunburn if they are planted in eastern or southern exposure.
Suggestion: give them a good drink and mulch them well just before ground freezes. Also, application of wilt-pruff wouldn't hurt either. Problem with WP is that you have to apply it when temp is above 40F and it will not last the whole winter, so you need (if practical) to reapply it again on a nice sunny day in January.
Good luck.
