Gardening at waist level

Just wanted to post this photo for anyone who needs ideas on how to plant vegetable gardens at waist level.

I have three of these 200 gallon containers that were used to ship large palms to a construction site.

Obviously you would have to get someone to set them up and fill with growing medium - and it does take a lot!! However I did fill the bottom half with bulky styrofoam from computer packing boxes, the plants don't need dirt all of the way to the bottom.

Currently planted:

collards, onions, sweet peas, two kinds of chives, strawberries, asparagus, snap beans

DH is building a screen 'cap' for the one planted with strawberries to keep the birds out

They certainly look delightful, and very productive.

Might you say what the concrete blocks in the photo are used for? Are they part of this system?

The concrete blocks are the start of another raised bed. As usual, I got involved with another project and haven't finished that one. I threw some some beans in it and will just let them grow there until I get around to working on it some more.
