Giant Leopard Moth Caterpillars

auburngirl(8)June 4, 2006

I found a giant leopard moth caterpillar in my petunias. I don't really know how it got there because my plants are on a second floor balcony. However, I kept the bug and was wondering if he is harmful or helpful to my plants? I am afraid to put him back in there if he is a bad bug. Any help would be great, cause he is hanging out in a glass jar right now.

Woolly bears "feed on almost any type of foliage, but only for a brief time before spinning a cocoon and emerging a few weeks later as a mature moth."

I've found a few woolly bears over the years but only spotted the moth once. I'd let the woolly bear go.

Auburngirl, he got there because the egg(s) was deposited on the petunia. This may have occurred on your balcony OR you may have brought it home with you from the garden center.
